Mark (the owner of MarkOv Solutions) actively contributes to the Open Source communities, in various ways:

• Developing and maintaining many large Perl modules;
• Developing new innovative technologies, recently Open Console, Meshy Space, and standardization efforts for Take-Down requests;
• Mark also speaks on many events, like Perl workshops and FOSDEM; and
• Mark is active in various boards and as event organizer.

All these projects are in his "Open" vision about work: embrace everyone to create better products together. No vendor lock-ins: let the best products compete.

A "minor" issue with this approach to work, is that it's not a strong financial business model. Many "Open" developers are employed by a company which benefits for the software; some of my work was created that way. But the results have a longer life than the projects: long term maintenance is usually not covered.
